About Electronic Component Stocks

Almost nobody talks about this group and parts of it have quietly been excellent. These are the pieces inside everything else: connectors, circuit boards, capacitors, power supplies, the cooling gear a room full of computers needs.

Two unlike businesses share the label, and confusing them is expensive. Component makers win a slot in someone's design years ahead, then ship for the life of that product, which makes revenue sticky and slow to turn in either direction. Contract manufacturers build to a customer's drawings and pass the parts through at cost, so their margins are thin by construction and their revenue is really their customers' volumes.

Because the same components go into cars, factories, phones and datacenters at once, this is a broad bet on industrial activity rather than a technology bet. The cyclicality is real, and stock sitting in the distribution channel tends to make the swings look worse than actual demand ever was.
