About Industrial Distributor Stocks

Distributors sound like the dullest thing on this site and several have been outstanding investments. They design nothing and manufacture nothing. They hold inventory, extend credit, and get the part to the buyer today rather than next week, and customers pay a real premium for that because a broken machine costs more per hour than the part ever will.

The economics are better than they look because the customer is not price shopping. A maintenance manager with a line down orders the part. Scale compounds the advantage, since a denser branch network and deeper inventory means faster delivery, which wins more customers, which funds more branches. That flywheel is why the large players keep taking share.

The thing that fools people is pass-through. When copper, steel or components get more expensive, revenue rises without a single extra unit moving, and it falls back the same way. Separate that from genuine share gains before concluding anything about growth, then look at inventory turns and branch density, which is where the actual quality shows up.
